As you know the spring equinox is a popular day to receive the spring the world, that is why many tourist sites get filled with visitors. Chichen Itza is not the exception, the archaeological site is an important destination to receive the spring equinox, and not only because a new season begins but for the spectacle in the Chichen Itza Pyramid.
The equinox means that Sun is perfectly above the Equator, which is equal in length to day and night. This is technically an equinox and marks the start of the new season.
Our planet normally orbits the sun on an axis that’s tilted 23.5 degrees, meaning that the hemispheres trade off getting more warmth from the sun. Two times a year, Earth’s orbit and its axial tilt combine so that the sun sits right above Earth’s Equator, casting the dividing line between the light and dark parts of the planet through the North and South Poles.
Other tourist sites such as Machu Picchu, Teotihuacan, Stonehenge are famous to receive the Equinox. At Chichen Itza, you'll not only get the first spring sunlight you will be able to see how Kukulkan goes downstairs through the Chichen Itza Pyramid. The Equinox in this sacred city is definitely a wonderful experience you must live.
During the equinox, you will be able to see seven triangles of light and shadow that creep downwards along the northeast stairway of the Pyramid. This is achieved thanks to sunlight that bathes the Kukulkan Pyramid in the Mayan city of Chichén-Itzá.
In this way, you can appreciate a diamond pattern representing a snake’s body. The effect is enhanced by the huge snakeheads carved at the bottom of the stairs. It is incredible how this phenomenon can happen just twice a year.
Chichen Itza used to receive thousands of visitors every Equinox, last year due to the pandemic starting the equinox had to be suspended, and this year it will be the same. Unfortunately owning to the current situation, massive events are not allowed anymore. During the equinox days, more than 15 thousand tourists arrived at the Archaeological site, an amount that is not accepted these days. In this way, the archaeological zone would be closed to tourists on March 20, 21, and 22 to prevent the spread of the virus and protect visitors, Chichen Itza will be closed during the Spring Equinox 2021.
