Depending on the year and the world situation Chichen Itza gets about2,500,000 visitors each year, being the last highest in 2019 when it received 2,300,000 visitors. In comparison there was a drastic decrease in visits in 2020 due to Covid, taking the number of visitors down to 823,795.

The nearest city to Chichen Itza is Valladolid which is 45 km or 28 miles. Chichen Itza is located west of Valladolid and the drive is pretty easy from it. Valladolid, Yucatan has turned into a Boutique city in the middle of the Yucatan Peninsula with really nice Boutique Hotels and restaurants to enjoy.

After Valladolid, the nearest big city is Merida which is the capital of the Yucatan State in which Chichen Itza is located. Chichen Itza is 120 km or 75 miles from Merida. Merida is a big city dedicated to commerce and local businesses. Locals are really friendly people and they love to eat Cochinita which is a typical Sunday breakfast. Chichen Itza is located east of Merida and it is really easy to get there thru the highway.

Chichen Itza is about 2 hours from Cancun and Cancun is the major tourist city from which travelers visit the Mayan Site. Its 200 km or 124 miles from Cancun to Chichen Itza and the ride is about 2 hrs if you take the highway depending on the road conditions and traffic. If you take the freeway to Chichen Itza from Cancun it’s a really picturesque ride and you’ll get to see lots of small Mayan towns but it will take you from 2:30 to 3:00 hrs, be aware that there’ll be lots of bumpers on the road. Chichen Itza is west of Cancun and they are both located in different States of the Yucatan Peninsula, Cancun is located in Quintana Roo and Chichen Itza is located in Yucatan.

Chichen Itza is about 2:20 hours from Playa del Carmen. Playa del Carmen is a very cosmopolitan city 45 minutes from Cancun. Its 181 km or 112 miles from Playa del Carmen to Chichen Itza and the ride is about 2:20 hrs depending on the road conditions and traffic. Chichen Itza is west and a little north of Playa del Carmen and they are both located in different States of the Yucatan Peninsula, Playa del Carmen is located in Quintana Roo and Chichen Itza is located in Yucatan.

Chichen Itza from Tulum

Chichen Itza is about 2:15 hours from Playa del Carmen. Tulum is a really trendy destination right now with luxury hotels and delicious restaurants, Tulum is about 2 Hrs from Cancun. Its 150 km or 93 miles from Tulum to Chichen Itza and the ride is about 2:15 hrs depending on the road conditions and traffic. Chichen Itza is northwest of Tulum and they are both located in different States of the Yucatan Peninsula, Tulum is located in Quintana Roo and Chichen Itza is located in Yucatan.
