Chichen Itza is an ancient city located in the state of Yucatan, eastern Mexico. Right in the middle of Merida Yucatan and the famous city of Cancún Quintana Roo, Chichen Itza is settled. The exact coordinates (in case you wonder) are 20.6843° N, 88.5678° W.

How to get to Chichen Itza?

There are different ways to get to Chichen Itza. Depending on where you are staying, your route to follow could be:

  • Chichen Itza from Valladolid

Valladolid is a picturesque city in Yucatán, and is the closest tourist city to Chichen Itza. It takes 30-40 minutes to get to the Mayan city from Valladolid , you can drive by yourself taking the Costera del Golfo 180 highway that takes you straight to Chichen Itza. There is public transportation available at Valladolid’s terminal as well.

  • Cancun to Chichen Itza

One of the top activities to do when traveling to Cancun or Riviera Maya is to visit this World Wonder on Mexican territory. The most common way to get to Chichen Itza from Cancun is by tour. The distance between these two locations is about 2.5 hours. However, you can rent a car, drive to the archaeological site, or take the public bus in Cancun Downtown.

The distance from Playa del Carmen to Chichen Itza is about 180 kilometers, 2.5 hours approximately. You can go by taking a Chichen Itza Tour which is a popular way to visit Chichen Itza, or taking the public bus or driving by yourself.

Although it is the last destination of Riviera Maya, it takes 2 hours to get to Chichen Itza from Tulum. The fastest route is going by the 109 highway which takes you directly to Valladolid, Yucatán.

Mérida is the capital city in Yucatán. It's home to beautiful colonial buildings and impressive museums. A great option for visiting as well. If you want to visit Chichen Itza from Mérida it will take you around 1.5 hours.

This yellow city is very close to the archaeological site, if you are staying in Izamal you should visit Chichen Itza and it will only take you 1 hour to get to one of the 7 wonders of the world.
